Got a basic roof rack - needs some work

posted 11 Apr 2009 09:03 by Ryan Carroll
My Dad and I borrowed a neighbour's trailer today and drove out to Noons Car Parts (one of our sponsors) to pick up a roof rack they'd put aside for us.  It came off a big transit and has an integral sliding ladder.  The frame is basic - with just two side supports and three cross-members.  But its made from heavy-duty steel and weighs a ton!  I removed the ladder assembly as we'll probably just take the ladder and bolt it to one of the rear doors.  We'll need to add some more cross-members and ideally some side walls.  We've got a couple of contacts that should be able to help with that.  We're not too fussed about the roof rack being perfect as its primarily needed for the journey to Mongolia, rather than something that the ambulance will need once it goes into service there.  Here's a picture of the roof rack in my Dad's back garden after I'd removed the ladder assembly.  We think that it will just fit the ambulance as I measured the roof at 6 ft wide and this rack seems to span about 5 ' 11" - nothing a bit of gentle persuasion with a hammer won't fix.  Fingers crossed.
